Hydrogen peroxide is a colorless liquid at room temperature with a bitter taste. Small amounts of gaseous hydrogen peroxide occur naturally in the air. Hydrogen peroxide is unstable, decomposing readily to oxygen and water with release of heat.

  • Hydrogen peroxide is a mild antiseptic used on the skin to prevent infection of minor cuts, scrapes, and burns.
  • It may also be used as a mouth rinse to help remove mucus or to relieve minor mouth irritation
  • It is commonly used as a laboratory reagent and also in its vapor form as a sterilizer
